It was the clever addition of these strings that made this song a hit. That was a Lynn Anderson original with the addition of those strings. The original recording by Joe South did not have those strings at the beginning. And today, can you image this song without the pile-driver string section at the beginning?

brought back memories of another time; my first husband who died too young at the age of 33 loved this gal; he had her records and drove me crazy playing them over and over; after he died i played them for a long time as a way of being close to him then one day i took a hammer and smashed them to pieces out of mad mad rushes of painful grief; anyho been a very long time since i have heard her sing

some one at the pub played this song so i had to add it to my fav list
